Kick Andy Matchett in the…

July 29th, 2010 -

I’m sure you folks are well aware of Finch House’s  “relationship” with Andy Matchett & the Minks.  We like to see him play as much as possible, and not just because of the confetti or the parachute party or that sweet  hairdo (PS – I heard Mosephine of the Equines has plans to challenge him in a hairspray-off contest).  We just plain and simple love his songs.

(P.S. the Equines are playing with Andy Matchett & the Minks Friday, July 30 at Fubar. Come for the bands, leave with an ice cream bar!!!)

And, by the gracious powers of sweet baby jesus, Andy Matchett & the Minks just released 11 of their finest songs on their first ever album, the Apple Tree Circle, July 23.  You can stream it here on their bandcamp page to see what we’re raving about these days.

Order a copy of the album on their kickstart page or just plain donate and have the option for Andy to write a rap album in your honor, shave his head, and wear a banana suit at his next show. Whatever your thing, Andy’s offering. TAKE ADVANTAGE WHILE YOU CAN.

Oh, and check out these photos from the AM&TM album release party with your very own Equines and Peter Baldwin by the fabulous Kelley Luna Pearl Jackson.

Western Expansion I

July 26th, 2010 -

Summer is the time of the year that bands tour and collect their winter clothes on the cheap.  It may also be the time to join a touring band or pick up an antique tour bus.  In full bloom, Finch House Records is bearing the heat to bring the goods across the United States, and we’re passing along the coolest bands, scenes, labels that we can find.

First off, we bring you the Lawrence, Kansas based cassette tape label, Solid Melts. I knew something funny was up when I walked into the house of our host, Drew Gibson, of Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk. Navigating between his massive collection of everything analog, we raided his basement dungeon for reverb tanks, tapes, and a summer compilation that the dude is giving away online! Check out Solid Melts’ Summer Compilation 2010: An Empire of Fun.

Creative Loafing reviews Fancy Rat

June 26th, 2010 -

“If goofy is your idea of fun, then Fancy Rat is your new best friend. Their seven-track self-titled debut EP was unveiled at a May 26 release party at the Shamrock, and brings the band’s live show, which is quite a sight to behold, to life in all its glory.”

Get on over to Creative Loafing and read what they have to say.

Fancy Rat is fixin’ to drop a load…

April 23rd, 2010 -

…In the form of their debut album.

2010-01-12-23.14.161

Hello, Sarasota and the world surrounding it… Fancy Rat has sprung from your loins and is ready to raise hell.

Over the past month the motley assortment of misfit musicians has been recording diligently in the quote-unquote studio, facing rivaling schedules (six band members are tricky to wrangle up) and the perils of shit jobs and foreclosure notices. The band’s instrumentation covers a sizable spectrum, featuring french horn (Sarah Mobarekeh), beat-boxing (Dan Demerin), and gang vocals, as well as the standards: electric lead guitar (Tobias Norton), acoustic rhythm guitar (Brian Yoder), and bass guitar (Adam Marret). Don’t want to read about it? Listen to their track featured on the Noise Ordinance compilation.

Bassist and recording engineer Adam Marret says he hopes the album, scheduled for release at Shamrock Pub on May 26, will “make everyone’s ears shit their pants”.  If you’ve seen their live show, you know exactly what Adam is talking about. While finishing touches find their places and release show details fall in order, you just sit pretty.

Your vigilance will bring you handsome, messy rewards.

The Pauses Pass the Hat

April 22nd, 2010 -

the Pauses Pass the Cute Hat
We have a beautiful sort of problem – an obsession, if you will. It’s been described as reminiscent to “the vocal stylings of Fiona Apple, but with more pop flavor and electronics.”
It’s called the Pauses.

We have yet to see the Pauses live. (Shh. Here’s a track they’re sharing for free, though, so you may get that good ol’ taste in yer mouth.) They are playing soon with our very own Equines at the Tropical Heatwave Festival in Ybor City May 15. Unfortunately, the two bands have the same exact time slot in two different venues. HOT DAMN.

Here’s the solution. The Pauses made a sweet video. They also need pledges (even one dollar) from music lovers in order to mix and master their first album, but they’re not just taking your money for nothing. Pledge $15 and get your name in the liner notes. Pledge $30 (like we did) and you’ll also receive a digital download of the album before its release.

If you help them, we can guilt/trick/persuade them into coming to Sarasota to play. Pretty please?
