Chicken & Whiskey and Burro Bags too!

June 17th, 2010 -

Jacksonville’s Chicken and Whiskey provide a few adjectives to describe their two keyboard + drum assault; including, but not limited to:

fun/mary jane/chicken(white and dark meat)/whiskey/bicycle/chris williams/zbbc/zbbs/burro/home recording/bongs/beer bongs/big dunn/tall bicycles/keyboards/singing/drums/jack diablo/suitcases/red bull cola/dance party/freak bicycle clubs/djs/heavy flow/the south/florida/duval/D.I.Y. OR DIE/fun

What is even more awesome? Keyboards/Vocalists Christ Williams and Big Dunn are part of Burro Bags, the custom handmade messenger bag outfitter. They do backpacks, hip bags, pedal straps, and presumably any other commission- using largely recycled materials.

We’ve made bags from old sails, couch leather, convertible tops, banners, but most proven and earth conscious has been our reuse of retired highway billboard which amounts to about 670 square feet of vinyl per advertisement, which would obviously fail to decompose.”

You can order direct from Burro Bags in their online store, or pick one up at their show June 24th at Pastimes Pub in Sarasota, FL. (Facebook)

We recently had the pleasure of inviting on a long-time friend and local favorite to shower us with a very special set on a very warm day.  Always clad with a sharp wit and charming smile, Bryan has been a strong influence in his local scene for a number of years.  We’re very proud to have the opportunity to bring to you a taste of this dish which many Sarasota natives have been enjoying for quite some time.

Say Goodbye- We’ve moving! :(

April 14th, 2010 -

“Sarasota seems like an unlikely place for a burgeoning music scene but this Florida gulf coast town is bursting at the seams with both talent and drive. Though, it makes sense since Sarasota sports a couple of art colleges sprouting out creative types of all kinds. As a collective, Finch House Records has nurtured a cohesive scene..”
-Jeffrey Howard, KickBrightZine

Goodbye, Gillespie!

Finch House is being foreclosed, thanks to the landlord, and all of us have to move out this weekend.

Built most sketchily in 1926, the historic William Finch house has most recently served as a revolving door of artists, musicians, and an outlet for creative scheming. Filled with the artwork of previous tenants, and the memory of bands come and past, everyone who visited has a story to tell. Some people fornicated. It saw the circle of life from beginning to end of Haveyouheard.net house in Atlanta. The porch jams I first attended solidified my lust for an artist commune. Its been a DIY reservoir that has directly shaped the current youth culture in Sarasota, because so many people came and went from these grounds. In the past year, “Finch House” materialized as an independent entity.

FinchHouse.com sees traffic of 12,000+ hits a month. Finch House Records dropped 2,500 cds. We threw one hell of a music festival, graced the cover of the Ticket, and even blogged for Creative Loafing, scoring three “Best of the Suncoast” awards within the house in 2009.

“…2009 was a notable year for the Suncoast music scene. Most prominent was the resurgence of cooperative spirit among original acts, with Finch House leading. The hippy-esque living quarters house band members/college-goers who study, create art and music, generate spontaneous ideas and freely share what they’ve learned. That includes generating sampler CDs of upcoming groups, holding regular concerts amongst their ranks, being available for impromptu fill-ins when venues get cancellations, and occasional ‘zine publication, all courtesy of The Equines’ frontgal Erin Murphy and sidekick Greg Ferris.”
-Dawn Scire, Sarasota Herald-Tribune

But we had a lot of help, and foolishly(?) went out of our length not to screw anyone, so here we are.  We’re throwing a “Finch House Foreclosure For Benefit” to support our rushed migration into stable quarters; there’s still a lot left to chew!  Fancy Rat’s EP will be out as soon as the dust settles.  The Equines are preparing a collaborative release with some big names.  Devin Robinson Band has hit the road on tour.  The Noise Ordinance music festival will continue next year.

If everything works out, we will have a new residence (Finch House 2: part one) to keep the good times going, bringing more regional & national acts to town, and contribute for years to come. Help us say goodbye this Friday, April 16th, at Felice’s Cafe.

Fringe Gallery

April 7th, 2010 -

“The indie showcase that started last spring as an underground alternative for rejected filmmakers has evolved into a mainstream draw. More than 4,000 patrons are expected to flock this year, and critics are heralding the homegrown selections in the 200-movie lineup.”

-Abby Weingarten, Sarasota Herald Tribune

I was first introduced to the Sarasota Film Festival with the campy 1963 film Bloodfeast. That was in 2004, and I think it was director Hershell Gordon Lewis that briefed the audience on the horror we were about to witness. Hooray for the Sarasota Film Festival, my 17 year old self thought.

Fast forward to 2009, when I’m back from college, and there are plenty of films Erin & I are dying to see. SFF really picked things up when we weren’t looking. For another year, the organizers face tough decisions in realizing their vision: enter the Fringe Film Festival.

So there are some strong feelings with each party. Squabbling aside, it’s undeniably a good thing that we have an event take place that is large enough to spawn satellites.  Whether or not the SFF recognizes that, Finch House found the offer of directly participating in the festival much more tempting than an unpaid “internship.” If I have to host the proceedings in my neighborhood, I want to play ball. Art Basel, anyone? Anyhow, we’ll still go to both events that are essentially in the same area…

The visual art contribution to Fringe Festival kicks off Wednesday, April 7th with the Fringe Gallery opening at 6 PM in the Main Street Plaza next to Hollywood 20.  The free event features work from resident artists including George Box,Jack Dowd, Giovanni Lunardi, Lori Frary, Francesco Agresti, Greg Ferris, and many more.
